The carvings are located in a series of 75 protected grottoes spread over 40 sites in the steep cliffs of the Dazu area, covering an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. They depict a wide range of Buddhist deities, figures, and scenes, as well as important historical figures, and everyday scenes of life in ancient China. These carvings, which originated in the 7th century, are famous for their remarkable artistic value, preservation of ancient Chinese art, and their historical significance in the propagation of Buddhism (Dazu Rock Carvings, 1999).
