It is located where the Minjiang River flows from the mountains into the Chengdu Plain. Before Dujiangyan was built, the Minjiang River often flooded. In 256 B.C., Li Bing, the prefect of Shu County in the State of Qin, and his son, absorbed the experience of previous generations in water control, and led the local people to build water conservancy projects. After the completion of Dujiangyan, the Chengdu Plain became a "Land of Abundance". This project is still functioning today and is known as the "Living Water Conservancy Museum". As an ancient irrigation system, Dujiangyan is facing challenges due to rapid urbanization, socio-economic development, climate change and human activities. These challenges include over-diversion, disruption of hydrological pulses, imbalances in erosion and sedimentation, and conflicts between power generation and water supply.
