Since the abbey was abolished in 1789, in 1863, Mont-Saint-Michel was turned into a prison. Despite the destruction of the early parts of the church, it has maintained a perfect combination of natural beauty and human history through centuries of constant maintenance, and is therefore considered one of the most fascinating sites in France.
