Starting from the top of Tomaros Mountains in Ioannina and ending in the Ionian Sea, in Homer's Odyssey, it was the river used to travel to the underworld. Due to this nature of the river, the Nekromanteion is also located in the area, which is an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Hades (the god of death) and Persephone (his wife). The river is also well-known for its unique ecosystem, which is home to endangered flora and fauna, which attracts tourists from all over the world.
