Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest fortifications in Europe and an important symbol of Scotland and Edinburgh. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it witnessed Scotland's historical wars and later became a military base. It is now owned by Scotland. Over the centuries, it has witnessed numerous historical events as a royal residence, prison and symbol of Scottish heritage.
