    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Together with Taung Skull Fossil Sites, Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai, and Environs, Makapan Valley is currently protected as National Heritage sites. And they are collectively called Fossil Hominid Sites of South Africa, also dubbed the 'Cradle of Humankind'. It is an important palaeontological site of human origin which is located about 300km to the northeast in Limpopo Province. The archaeological caves are essential as evidence of human occupation and evolution. The traces and wealth of animal and hominid fossil here prove that the early hominids can be dated back to 3.3 million years. Makapansgat limeworks is the oldest of the cave sites in Makapan Valley which dates back to 4.0 million years until about 1.6 million years ago.
