It was once the largest church in the country, making St. Andrews the religious center of Scotland during the medieval period. However, it fell into ruin due to weather and the Scottish Reformation, leaving only fragments of its original grandeur. Its architectural style blends Romanesque and Gothic elements, reflecting its long construction period and multiple phases of rebuilding, making it a unique landmark. Although not a UNESCO site, St. Andrews Cathedral is protected by Historic Environment Scotland. Today, the ruins remain a symbol of Scotland’s religious, cultural, and architectural history, aligning with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities) by preserving Scotland’s cultural heritage and ensuring public access to historical knowledge.
