Archaeologists to this day still debate the origin of the mound, with some claiming that radiocarbon studies show it to be more than 2000 years old, dating back to the Adena culture in the 4th century BC. What is potentially most fascinating about the Serpent Mound is that the serpent’s open mouth perfectly aligns with the summer solstice sunset, while the tail points to the winter solstice sunrise. It is for this reason that the heritage is considered to have been of temporal significance in order to mark dates; however it may also have held spiritual significance as graves and burial sites were discovered near the mound.
