All these works of art reflect the religious themes of Buddhism and represent the highest peak of Chinese stone carving art. Located on both sides of Yihe, south of the ancient capital of Luoyang, Longmen Grottoes is made up of more than 2,300 caves and niches carved into a kilometer-long cliff of steep limestone. The statues include nearly 110,000 Buddhist statues, more than 60 stupas and 2,800 inscriptions on stone tablets. Luoyang was the capital of the late Northern Wei Dynasty and the early Tang dynasty.
