A ‘thermae’ is an ancient Roman Bath house, and the one found in the city of Bath was built by the rulers of Roman Britain sometime during the first century. The baths reflect the, at times tremulous, history of the island, as the original baths were left in ruins when the Roman Empire collapsed in the 5th century. However, they would go on to be redeveloped several times in the Middle Ages, which reflects the resurgence of interest in the classic world that was developing throughout Europe during this time period.
