At the time, it was India's richest city which drew traders from Portugal and Persia. In 1565, the Vijayanagara Empire was conquered by a coalition of Muslim sultanates, and Hampi was pillaged and destroyed and ultimately left in ruins. Currently, Hampi is a religious centre, and UNESCO describes it consist of "forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures and others".
