The technique became popular and widely adopted in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127 – 1279), reaching its popularity peak in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Kesi has been known as the 'silk silt tapestry', a textile that depicts animals, flowers, and human figures in very fine detail by translating paintings into the fabric, with lightness and clarity of pattern retained. From a distance, kesi appeared to be paintings; as a viewer moves closer, she will see the investment of labour appearing in a three-dimensional appearance, with textured brushstrokes expressed.
