<dcterms:subject><![CDATA[Intangible Heritage]]></dcterms:subject>
<dcterms:description><![CDATA[In 1995-6 York Archaeological Trust undertook two seasons of excavation at Fey Field Whithorn,
directed by A. Clarke. The excavations uncovered the remains that were largely of 6th to 10
th
century date and related to the important early-medieval monastery at the site. The
excavations, the post-excavation work and the production of this web-based publication were
all generously funded by the Whithorn Trust.
This Pdf report represents a copy of a report which was designed as an interactive web report
that was originally hosted on York Archaeological Trust’s website. Due to changes in the design
of this website the original interactive report is no longer available. This Pdf was produced to
ensure that the information held in the original report remained widely available. As the original
report was designed for web-viewing, its’ design did not follow conventional publication
formats. There were some problems when converting the web information into this Pdf, notably
with the figures, which though perfectly clear when viewed on the web are slightly blurred when
transferred into Pdf format. In addition, there are no Plate numbers in the text, as the
photographs were originally simply embedded in the web-text at the relevant point. This Pdf
follows the layout of the original web report exactly, and readers should bear these limitations
in mind while reading the report.]]></dcterms:description>

We journey through the works of John MacCodrum and Dòmhnall ‘Ruadh’ Choruna, who still influence present-day musicians, such as singers Julie Fowlis, Linda MacLeod and the band Beinn Lee, who have played major roles in modernising the tradition. Songwriters, Calum and Rory MacDonald, are known the world over; their influence is international as part of the band Runrig. Here you will find poetry, music, song, piping, dance-music and field-workers, who played an important role in the preservation of oral and written works. Music’s influence on the fashion of the day is also apparent, as the photographs will testify. This, however, is the beginning of a journey that aims to identify and preserve home recordings, tapes, video, film, photographs and other materials from within the local community. Undoubtedly, there are many priceless items tucked away in drawers, cupboards, lofts, sheds, out of sight and mind. We hope that discoveries will ensure that the story of ‘Ceòl Uibhist a Tuath’ will continue to evolve through the work of the Comann Eachdraidh.]]></dcterms:description>

The Whithorn Trust is a charity (Registered no. SC012178 ) which was set up in 1986 to explore the archaeology and history of Whithorn, and to examine its role in the evolution of Christianity in Scotland.

The Trust was established as a direct consequence of an archaeological excavation at Whithorn in 1984. This project showed that remains had survived, which dated back to the early centuries of Whithorn’s development as a Christian centre. These discoveries were so significant as to justify further investigation.

A sacred place for Christians from at least the 600s, the cult of St Ninian flourished here for over a thousand years. It brought travellers, traders, pilgrims and royalty to Whithorn from home and abroad. The site’s fortunes have fluctuated with those of the Church. After rising to great heights of wealth and glory, Whithorn was suppressed during the Protestant Reformation of 1560, and afterwards became a simple parish church. The stratigraphy of the site and the extensive medieval graveyard which interrupted lower layers made it a challenging site to interpret. Below the graveyard was evidence of a Hiberno-Norse trading settlement, with extensive evidence of manufacture, including high-status comb manufacture similar to those found at Viking Dublin. An extensive Northumbrian church complex was also uncovered and in the earliest layers, evidence of shrines, including those which seem to be a focal point for the other burials. Much of this seemed to support Bede’s account of a saint, buried with “many other saints”.]]></dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description><![CDATA[A well-known and documented railway disaster. The Tay Bridge disaster was a tragic event that occurred on December 28, 1879, when the central spans of the newly built Tay Rail Bridge in Scotland collapsed during a severe storm. A train carrying approximately 75 passengers and crew was crossing the bridge at the time and plunged into the icy waters of the River Tay, resulting in the loss of all aboard. The disaster shocked the nation and led to a thorough investigation that blamed the bridge's design and construction for the collapse.

Although BLUE is a small NGO, it punches above its weight, having achieved a tremendous amount for the oceans in a short time. In 2014 BLUE won NGO of the Year in the PEA (People Environment Achievement) Awards in recognition that it was ‘getting results where they matter most’. In 2015 BLUE won four PEA Awards as part of the GB Oceans Coalition including ‘Overall Champion’. The Berwickshire Marine Reserve works to preserve this unique environment through conservation and education. Located on the east coast of Scotland, between the historic fishing towns of Eyemouth and St Abbs, the reserve supports conservation activities and research, while promoting responsible recreational use of the waters and advocating for sustainable fishing practices. Berwickshire Marine Reserve is a registered charity and is Scotland’s only voluntary marine reserve. For more information visit https://www.berwickshiremarinereserve.org.uk/]]></dcterms:description>

We know CVI is a very complex medical condition. Our simulations serve many purposes. Most important is to help with understanding, to improve support for people affected by CVI. CVI-SIM has also proved to be an effective platform for research, and through listening to people with CVI, we are learning more and more about the condition.
