It was probably built in the early twelfth century, perhaps by workmen from northern England. The church is in the Romanesque (or Norman) style that was then popular across much of Europe. Its high tower is visible for many miles, and may have been designed to guide seafarers to St Andrews. In the late twelfth century St Rule's was superseded by the much larger cathedral whose ruins it stands beside. Nevertheless, the old church remained important to the canons of St Andrews Cathedral, and an image of St Rule's was used on the cathedral canons' seal for official documents until after the Reformation.]]></dcterms:description>

<dcterms:title><![CDATA[The Church at Velika Castle, Larissa, Greece]]></dcterms:title>
    <dcterms:subject><![CDATA[Intangible Heritage]]></dcterms:subject>
<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Velika castle occupies a hilltop overlooking the Aegean near the modern coastal settlement of the same name in the modern prefecture of Larissa. The castle is certainly founded in the Hellenistic period, but only small fragments of the ramparts of this era have been uncovered to date. Its main construction phase dates to the sixth century AD, confirmed by the results of the research of the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities conducted there since 2010. A late antique church is situated in the northeast corner of the fortified settlement, just beside a secondary gate of the walls. It is a three-aisled basilica ending in a semicircular apse to the east and with a narthex in the west. Remnants of the altar and the sanctuary as well as the constructed base of the ambo (pulpit) in the south part of the nave have been revealed through excavation. The apse has a peculiar orthogonal projection which had been embraced by the city walls of the settlement at a later period; the east wall of the north aisle has a small window, while the same wall of the south aisle has a door leading to the corridor behind the ramparts. The church is presumably founded in the second part of the sixth century; the major part of the pottery and the findings are dating from the age of Justinian up to the end of the century. The church underwent a major transformation at a later date, possibly at the end of the seventh or the beginning of the eighth century: it then became a single-nave church, since the side aisles were transformed into living quarters and storerooms; many amphorae and large storage ceramics have been found in the filling layers along with every-day artefacts (fishing hooks and belt buckles) and a small hearth at the northwest corner of the north aisle. ]]></dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Hamilton Palace in South Lanarkshire was once the grandest stately home in Scotland. It was developed over several centuries by the Hamilton family, eventually becoming a Palladian mansion which rivalled (and arguably surpassed) many royal residences. The demolition of the palace in the 1920s was a major loss to Scotland’s architectural heritage. Meanwhile, the sale of its furnishings and art collection brought about the dispersal of the country’s ‘biggest treasure trove’ (National Museum of Scotland 2016). Today, many are unaware of the scale and splendour of this vanished great house – a place that shortly before its destruction was praised as representing ‘the best that the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries produced’ (Country Life 1919). Hamilton Palace was demolished, after coal works beneath the house were discovered to threaten its structural integrity. "It is a thousand pities" wrote that doyen of departed country houses H. Avery Tipping in a preface to one of the 1919 Hamilton Palace sale catalogues, "that so great and historic a house should disappear. .. Within and without the Palace offers us of the best that the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries produced, and the present dispersal yields a very unusual opportunity of acquiring sumptuous examples of all three periods in the finest possible state of preservation."]]></dcterms:description>

Just a few miles north of Ballycastle, on the edge of the earth overlooking the wild Atlantic, lies the rugged, windswept outcrop of Downpatrick Head. Now a Signature Discovery Point on the famed Wild Atlantic Way, the area provides unparalleled views of the ocean, including a unique vantage point over the Stags of Broadhaven. A majestic sea stack rises tower-like from the sea, with its centuries of layered rock providing shelter to thousands of nesting sea birds.

<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Sandybed house, better known as Bothwell Castle in Haddington, was not in fact a castle but a late 16th-century, wealthy town house which consisted of a main block running N-S and two wings which extended E to the river, enclosing a small courtyard. A round tower projected at the front SW angle, while at the E end of the S wing was a rectangular dovecot integral with the wall.

The house was sadly demolished in 1952. In 2018, we worked with Jon Cooper and some other members of Haddington History Society to gather information and gain a better understanding of this now lost part of Haddington's vast history.
