This model was developed in SketchUp 2014. Evidence This basilica is the only systematically excavated at the Aegean coast of Thessaly in the last fifty years. The castle is certainly founded in the Hellenistic period, but only small fragments of the ramparts of this era have been uncovered to date. Its main construction phase dates to the sixth century AD, confirmed by the results of the research of the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities conducted there since 2010. A late antique church is situated in the northeast corner of the fortified settlement, just beside a secondary gate of the walls. It is a three-aisled basilica ending in a semicircular apse to the east and with a narthex in the west. Remnants of the altar and the sanctuary as well as the constructed base of the ambo (pulpit) in the south part of the nave have been revealed through excavation. The apse has a peculiar orthogonal projection which had been embraced by the city walls of the settlement at a later period; the east wall of the north aisle has a small window, while the same wall of the south aisle has a door leading to the corridor behind the ramparts. The church is presumably founded in the second part of the sixth century; the major part of the pottery and the findings are dating from the age of Justinian up to the end of the century. Recent research (in particular by Godfrey Evans and the National Museum of Scotland) has enhanced scholarly understanding of the design and development of the palace. Yet public awareness of this lost monument remains limited. This is despite the fact that the modern geography of the town of Hamilton is shaped by the palace’s designed landscape and several associated monuments (such as the Hamilton Mausoleum) still survive. A digital reconstruction of the historic appearance of the palace and it setting could help communities in Hamilton and further afield better understand this remarkable site and enhance appreciation of the fragmentary heritage which has survived. The demolition of Hamilton Palace, then the principal residence of Scotland's premier Dukedom of Hamilton and Brandon, took place during the 1920s. Its contents, arguably the most magnificent ever assembled in this country, the Royal collections excepted, were dispersed through a series of sales beginning in the 1880s and culminating in 1919. There were, of course, good and particular reasons for the demolition of this great house and from today's vantage point we can also set the abandonment of such establishments more clearly in the context of changing economic, political and social conditions. It was developed over several centuries by the Hamilton family, eventually becoming a Palladian mansion which rivalled (and arguably surpassed) many royal residences. The demolition of the palace in the 1920s was a major loss to Scotland’s architectural heritage. At the southwest corner, there remained the tower portion of a circular tower, in which was the main entrance. Above the doorway was a weather-worn Coat of Arms. A remarkable feature was a rectangular dovecot forming part of the main structure. Rooms in this grand mansion had been lined with wooden panelling and iron door fittings, excellent examples, it is believed, of local craftsmanship. The kitchen was vaulted and had a large fireplace. There were at least a dozen apartments besides the kitchen and cellar premises." Sandybed house was associated with the Cockburn family. A round tower projected at the front SW angle, while at the E end of the S wing was a rectangular dovecot integral with the wall. The house was sadly demolished in 1952.
