Introduction

Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris is considered a historical and cultural gem of France and the world. It is a treasure of French Gothic architecture and is a renowned house of worship in the Christian world. The cathedral church in Paris is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages and is distinguished for its size, antiquity, and architectural interest. Notre-Dame lies at the eastern end of the Île de la Cité and was built on the ruins of two earlier churches, which were themselves predated by a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter123.

The cathedral has witnessed many coronations, wars, and restorations. From the crowning on Henry VI of England in 1431, Napoleon’s crowning in 1804, and to the honoring of Joan of Arc in 19092, it has played an important role in French history. It has also been an inspiration for many writers and artists throughout history3.

The cathedral houses priceless artefacts, paintings and sculptures. It has been home to many important religious relics such as the Crown of Thorns, which is believed to have been worn by Jesus Christ during his crucifixion4The cathedral also contains many beautiful stained-glass windows that date back to the 13th century1.

Notre Dame Cathedral attracts nearly 14 million tourists per year3. It is a symbol of French culture and heritage that has stood for over 800 years. The fire that occurred on April 15th, 2019 caused significant damage to the cathedral’s roof and spire. However, it has since undergone extensive restoration work to preserve its historical value for future generations4.

Potential Threats

Standing in the heart of the city, the cathedral has withstood over 850 years of change and endured many disasters, including the devastating fire in April 2019. However, in the face of climate change, Notre Dame de Paris and many other historical buildings around the world may face an uncertain future.

Preservation

In recent years, the preservation of Notre Dame de Paris has been a major concern, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating fire that occurred on April 15, 2019. The fire, which started in the attic of the cathedral, destroyed the roof, the spire, and damaged the building’s interior. The fire caused significant damage to the cathedral, and it was feared that the entire structure would collapse.
