Landscape Degradation Threat
Climate change is having a major impact on Jiuzhaigou, specifically causing landscape degradation. This area is known for its stunning turquoise lakes, created by the deposition of calcium carbonate from nearby mountains. However, rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns have led to decreased water levels, slowing down the calcification process.
Additionally, research shows that hydrological processes and extreme weather events, both linked to climate change, are contributing to the degradation of Travertine.
Increasing Extreme Weather Events
Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as heavy rains and floods. These events can trigger landslides and mudflows, which can block roads and disrupt transportation to and from the park. The remote location of Jiuzhaigou makes it particularly vulnerable to these disruptions.
In 2017, the scenic area was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which caused extensive damage to the area.
In 2018, the area was hit again, this time by a “7.10” flood disaster. The caused widespread damage to Jiuzhaigou county resulting in huge financial damage.
Ecosystem Threat
As a protected area, Jiuzhaigou is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, many of which are at risk due to climate change. The park’s ancient forests, snow-capped peaks, and alpine meadows are all susceptible to the effects of rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns. The delicate balance of these ecosystems could be disrupted, potentially leading to the loss of unique species and biodiversity.
