Environmental Stress from Tourism

Increased tourism has overloaded the fragile ecosystem of the Mogao Caves, causing physical and ecological stress. The interior environments of the caves are particularly affected by high visitor numbers, which introduce humidity, carbon dioxide, and heat. This exacerbates the deterioration of the caves’ murals and sculptures by altering temperature and humidity levels, leading to physical damage like foaming, efflorescence, and discoloration of wall paintings.
