Description

The Archaeological Site of Olympia was located in the Ilia region in the west of the Peloponnese, a valley of the Alpheios River. This site was built in honor of the Greek God Zeus from the 10th century BC (World Heritage Journeys, n.d.). It includes the principal temples of Zeus and Hera, athletic premises for the preparation of the Olympic Games, and other ancient sanctuaries, buildings, and monuments (Visit Greece, n.d.). The famous sporting event, The Olympic Games was originated from here. In 1989 this site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its historical importance to human beings
