Colored Orphan Asylum’s digital reconstruction project aims to trace and recreate this institution of significant historical value and cultural heritage in New York City. The core objectives of this project can be summarized as follows:
- Preserving history
Colored Orphan Asylum stands as a symbolic institution that bears witness to the challenges and achievements of communities of color in the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time, many of the physical artifacts and materials associated with it have been lost or damaged. Through 3-D modeling and virtual reality technology, we hope to preserve an accurate visual record of this precious heritage and ensure that future generations will be able to understand and appreciate it in new ways. - Educating the public
This project is more than just a retrospective of the past; it is also dedicated to educating the present and future generations. Through the creation of interactive 3D exhibits and virtual tours, students, historians, and the general public will be able to experience first-hand the living and working environment of the orphanage, gaining insight into the roles and challenges faced by people of color in society at the time. The project will be a powerful tool for educational institutions to help people understand and appreciate the complexity and diversity of our shared history. - Community Engagement and Empowerment
Colored Orphan Asylum’s digital reconstruction project encourages the active participation of community members. Through lectures, workshops and online platforms, we hope to encourage people to share their stories and perspectives, offering personal insights into the history of the orphanage. This process not only enhances the depth and richness of the project, but also helps to foster a sense of identity and pride in communities of color. - Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration
By bringing together experts from a variety of fields, including historians, artists, programmers, and educators, our project demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary collaboration. Such a collaborative model will promote people from different backgrounds and professions to learn, work and innovate together, breaking down traditional boundaries and providing new perspectives and solutions to complex problems. - Overall, Colored Orphan Asylum’s Digital Reconstruction Project is a dynamic and diverse project that seeks to build bridges between the past and the present through the use of modern technology, giving new life and meaning to our shared history and cultural heritage. We invite you to join us on this journey of exploration and discovery as we embark on a new chapter of history education and community engagement.
